Top Ten Tents for Camping
When selecting a tent for a weekend outing or a week long adventure, you’ll need to consider usable space, overall durability and resistance to the elements, as well as something that will meet your needs without weighing you down.
There are tons of top quality tents that cost more than your first car and here at Survival Lists we just don’t see that as practical. We’re not cheapskates, but some things are priced to make you think “that has to be better” for no good reason. Therefore, cost as well as quality plays a big part in our selection of the top tents for camping.
1. Coleman Red Canyon 17-Foot by 10-Foot 8-Person Modified Dome Tent
Our top tent is the Coleman Red Canyon 17-Foot by 10-Foot 8-Person Modified Dome Tent. Bang for the buck, this tent is a winner. It has tons of space and very good reviews for durability and extreme weather protection. It is an 8 person tent and weighs 24.5 lbs which is lighter than many other tents of its size.
Reviewers liked that it was waterproof, that the tent poles are color coded, and that it only takes about ten minutes to set up the tent with two people. People also said that the tent kept them completely dry during storms with high winds.
2. Coleman 14×10 Foot 8 Person Instant Tent
Number two on our list is the Coleman 14×10 Foot 8 Person Instant Tent. This tent is very big, very easy and very idiot proof. Even I could set it up by myself after the cocktail hour. It is heavy material and built to last but, at a hefty 44 lbs, you might not want to carry it into the wild (or more than 10 feet from the car). This one would be a great choice for “bugging out” in your backyard if your home suddenly becomes uninhabitable or you’re worried about aftershocks in an earthquake situation.
3. Mountain Trails Grand Pass 18- by 10-Foot, 2-Room 6 to 7-Person Family Dome Tent
Number three on our list is a big tent that’s big on value, the Mountain Trails Grand Pass 18- by 10-Foot, 2-Room 6 to 7-Person Family Dome Tent. It’s rated for 6 or 7 people but it’s bigger than some tents which claim to sleep 9. Wenzel tents sometimes receive less than glowing reviews for build quality but our research has shown that this one is tough and watertight. If you need a tent that’s large and can be easily packed this featherweight is just about 21 pounds!
4. Wenzel Klondike 16 X 11-Feet Eight-Person Family Cabin Dome Tent
Next we have the number four tent on our list, the Wenzel Klondike 16 X 11-Feet Eight-Person Family Cabin Dome Tent . This tent is another large and lightweight tent that will easily accommodate your family and without breaking your back or your budget. It’s just about 27 lbs with a large mesh screen room so which provides sleeping room for five in the main room and three in the screen room. One highlight of this tent which may be lacking in other affordable tents are the sturdy double stake corners. Also, the interior height is a stand up 6ft5inches!
Reviews say: “(Screened) room is great” for removing dirty shoes and clothes, “good zippers.” Another reviewer said this tent was well laid out “for air circulation” and another said they “never felt a drop” of rain during a storm.
5. Coleman Sundome 4-Person Tent, Green
Here we have the first medium sized tent at number five on our list so if your looking for a tent for you and rover or yourself and your sweetheart then the Coleman Sundome 4-Person Tent, Greenmight be number one in yur book. This puppy has 63 square ft. of sleeping and storage space and is just shy of 5 ft tall. That is a good sized ten pound tent but it’s more like three person than four. It has thick materials and good ventilation and, at this price, why not?
Reviews say: “Very easy,” “well worth pitchin’,”almost entirely mesh (on the sides of the tent),”. One reviewer mentioned it was not great for dusty conditions and many people commented on it’s quality as waterproof and bug-proof.
6. Coleman Evanston 6 Screened Tent
The sixth tent on our list of top tents for camping is Coleman Evanston 6 Screened Tent. This six person rig is a lot of tent for the money. It’s made of materials which are usually found in higher priced tents. Although it’s labeled as having one room, the Evanston 6 includes a sizable front mesh area for storage and better ventilation.
7. ALPS Mountaineering Chaos 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season
The seventh tent on our list is ALPS Mountaineering Chaos 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season. It’s a top quality 2-3 person tent that is available in two different configurations, the slightly smaller of which is fairly reasonably priced. It is a true bug out ready tent at just 7 pounds and is made of very high quality weatherproof materials. This tent will stand up to most conditions and it comes with a lifetime warranty which may make this tent worth it’s slightly higher price tag.
Reviews say: “Everything I hoped,”"(great for)adventure camping,”"not one leak,”good ventilation,”"quality purchase.” Many reviews mentioned that this tent is ideal for campers on the move and another said purchasers “won’t be disappointed.”
8. Coleman Montana 8 Tent
Number eight on our list is the tried and true Coleman Montana 8 Tent. This nifty eight person tent features an extended rain awning and a hinged front door. It’s a bit on the heavy side at about 26 pounds but it has 112 square feet of space and a 6 foot 2 inch center height.
9. Wenzel Kodiak Family Cabin Dome Tent
Check out number 9, the unique Wenzel Kodiak Family Cabin Dome Tent. This ultra sturdy tent is a hefty 35 pounds but that’s because it’s features a steel frame and features like gear lofts and storage sacks. It has vertical walls and picture/bay windows for a spacious, real cabin feel. Talk about tent camping in style…and the quality construction of this top tent will keep the camping deluxe for decades.
10. Eureka! Backcountry 1
Last but not least we have the Eureka! Backcountry 1. This high quality, one person backpacking tent is less than 4 pounds and affords 24 cubic feet of space. It received full marks for quality and ease of use from almost every reviewer. It’s a bit on the pricey side for a one person tent but, unlike many one person tents, it has enough space for someone and the gear they are likely to have with them. Another reason this tent made our list of top ten tents for camping is that it’s freestanding, so set up and moving it is a breeze. If you want a bit more room for a bit less money and the freestanding feature doesn’t matter to you there is a good quality tent called the ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 2.0 Tent: 2-Person 3-Season which you may want to check out.
